Your vehicle operates from a series of systems within the engine. Each system has several components to help it operate properly. The acceleration system allows you to use the power you need to increase your speed and the power in your vehicle when you need extra strength to accomplish a given task. A primary part of the acceleration system is the throttle body. When issues arise with the throttle body, you will know it because you’ll notice that your performance drops.

Throttle Body

In essence, a throttle body is responsible for controlling the amount of air that enters the engine of your vehicle. When you push down on the gas pedal, the throttle body opens to allow more air to enter the engine. This also draws more fuel to the engine, allowing the vehicle to accelerate. This is the main component to any internal combustion engine in a vehicle. When it fails, the engine loses performance and efficiency.

How Does It Work?

When the throttle body functions correctly, this is what happens:

  • The throttle body is connected to the accelerator by a mechanical link in older vehicles and by an electronic link in newer vehicles. When you depress the accelerator, a throttle plate in the throttle body opens to allow more airflow into the engine.
  • When the plate opens, a Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) sends a signal to the Engine Control Module (ECM) to let it know the position of the plate.
  • From there the ECM monitors various engine functions like fuel injection, ignition timing, and air intake. The ECM calculates the appropriate amount of fuel required to mix with air intake, so you get the desired engine and performance.
  • When the throttle plate opens, more air rushes into the intake manifold. The ECM adjusts the fuel injection to provide adequate fuel to create a good air-fuel mixture for proper combustion. When you release the accelerator pedal, the throttle plate closes to reduce airflow and fuel delivery.

How Will I Know If I Need Throttle Body Service?

Essentially, if there is problem with the throttle body, your fuel economy will go down, and your performance will decrease. You may also notice a rough idle, and your engine may stall when you are accelerating. This can be very dangerous if you need to accelerate quickly and the engine doesn’t respond accordingly.
